ASCO's Cancer.Net to be Featured During Frosted Pink with a Twist

Landmark Television Event to Air Sunday, October 12, 4:00 - 6:00 PM ET on ABC

Alexandria, VA - The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has joined forces with current and former Olympic champions to raise awareness of women's cancers and inspire people to learn more about early detection, prevention, and advances in cancer care and treatment. The initiative, Frosted Pink with a Twist , selected ASCO's consumer website Cancer.Net, as the campaign's cancer information resource. This show will air Sunday, October 12 from 4:00 - 6:00 PM ET on ABC.

"This year in the United States, an estimated 260,000 women will be diagnosed with breast, cervical, endometrial, ovarian, vaginal, and vulvar cancers, and nearly 70,000 women will die from these diseases," said ASCO President Richard Schilsky, MD. "It is important to raise awareness about these diseases so individuals can become educated, motivated and empowered to take action. We are truly honored that Cancer.Net was chosen as the national information resource for this important message being carried by America's Olympic athletes."

"We all know someone who has been touched by cancer - in my case it is my grandmother," said 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson. "My family understands how important trusted information on cancer is and that's why I feel privileged to work with an organization that provides such important resources for people living with cancer like Cancer.Net."

Cancer.Net is the official cancer information resource for Frosted Pink with a Twist, the anchor event of a multi-year television network, cable network and multimedia campaign that focuses on educating viewers about cancers that primarily affect women. The event will showcase gymnastics stars from the Beijing Summer Olympics as well as pop music icons to promote cancer awareness and celebrate survivorship. Hosted by Olympic champions Shannon Miller and Scott Hamilton, the show will feature performances by gymnasts Shawn Johnson, Paul and Morgan Hamm, and music icons Natasha Bedingfield, Kenny Loggins, Cyndi Lauper, Carole King, and many more.

During the program, viewers will be directed to visit Cancer.Net to find doctor-approved information vital to people living with cancer and those who care for and about them. Cancer.Net offers a variety of helpful resources for the newly diagnosed to the long term cancer survivor. ASCO partners with doctors, nurses, social workers and patient advocates around the globe to provide comprehensive, reliable information on more than 120 types of cancer.

Several current and former Olympic Gold medal winning athletes have teamed up to promote Cancer.Net in a 30-second video spot (YouTube), scheduled to air during the show. The athletes include: 2008 Olympic gymnastic champion Shawn Johnson; 1992 and 1996 Olympic gymnastic champion Shannon Miller; 1998 Olympic figure skating champion Tara Lipinski; 2008 Olympic gymnastic champion Nastia Liukin; 1996 Olympic gymnastic champion Dominique Moceanu; and 1996 Olympic gymnastic champion Amanda Borden.

ASCO joins the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF), the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (OCNA), the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC), and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) as an outreach partner for the event.
