ASCO Daily News Wrap-Up Edition Now Available

The wrap-up edition of ASCO Daily News, the official newspaper of ASCO’s Annual Meeting, is now available. The final issue in the 2006 edition includes the latest results of phase III trials and news about various therapeutic approaches to treating patients with cancer. All ASCO members receive a print version of the wrap-up edition of ASCO Daily News by mail.

“The goal of the wrap-up edition of ASCO Daily News is to provide a detailed synopsis of important medical research that will be relevant to non-attendees and attendees alike,” says Monica Morrow, MD, Editor of the newspaper.

The final issue of the newspaper includes coverage of the Monday Plenary session, at which attendees heard results from a randomized trial to evaluate the roles calcium and vitamin D in the prevention of breast cancer, as well as results from the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR) trial to examine prevention of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women at high risk. Also at the Monday Plenary session, V. Craig Jordan, OBE, PhD, DSc, recounted the development of selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) in the American Cancer Society Award lecture.

The wrap-up edition also contains coverage of preliminary results from a phase III trial presented during Monday’s Oral Abstract Session on Gastrointestinal (Colorectal) Cancer, which indicate that short-course pre-operative radiation and total mesorectal excision improve outcomes in patients with resectable non-metastatic rectal adenocarcinoma. The newspaper also features an article about how patients with metastatic colorectal cancer and good prognostic status may be ideal candidates for intermittent chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and the addition of oxaliplatin.

The newspaper was the 2006 recipient of an APEX Award for Publication Excellence, sponsored by Communications Concepts, Inc. The Society was selected to receive the “Award of Excellence” in the Magapapers and Newspapers” four-print color category from among 193 entries. APEX Awards are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and the ability to achieve excellence overall in communications.

Additionally, for its coverage of the 2005 Annual Meeting, ASCO Daily News received a Silver Award from the Society of National Association Publications (SNAP), a nonprofit group that supports association publishers. The SNAP EXCEL Awards are presented annually to society publications that exhibit exemplary work in a variety of categories.
